What is the Certified Career Counselor Educator (CCCE) credential?
This credential is designed to recognize faculty and other counselor educators whose primary focus is on the training of new counselors who will specialize in the field of career counseling and career development including research, publications, scholarly work and other contributions to the field of career counseling.
Who is eligible for the CCCE?
To be eligible for the CCCE, you need:
- A doctorate in counselor education, counseling psychology, or a closely related field.
- Experience teaching master’s level student counselors how to do career counseling – you need to have taught this course at least 3 times.
- Evidence that you have focused on career counseling through your practice, publications, research, or service activities.

The CCCE credential is designed to recognize faculty and other counselor educators whose primary focus is on the training of new counselors who will specialize in the field of career counseling and career development including research, publications, scholarly work and other contributions to the field of career counseling.
I have a doctorate in counselor education. Why would I want to a CCCE credential?
The CCCE credential is designed to recognize people who care deeply about career counseling and educating the next generation of career counselors. Do you love to teach? Are you concerned about assuring graduating master’s level counselors are competent in career counseling? Do you want to pass your passion for career counseling on to others? Tell the world that career counseling is more than just one of the subjects you can teach. It is something you care about and you want to make sure everyone who needs it gets quality career counseling.

What are the competencies required to become a CCCE?
Successful certification focuses on the competencies at the intersection of career and counselor education. Candidates must demonstrate expertise to teach students across the following domains: career counseling with diverse populations including ethnicity, abilities, and other diverse identities; career counseling theories and techniques; career assessment; career counseling ethics and standards; and labor market information and career trends.
What are the steps to apply for the CCCE?
The application is online. Please note that due to the verification process, you will not immediately move forward to the next step in the application process. Remember, headquarters is open Monday-Thursday, 7am-5pm (central time). Thus, if you start the application process on a Thursday or Friday, you will not have access to the case studies until the following week. The application includes these steps:
- Contact & Demographic Information - Tell us how to reach you and give us demographic information that can be used for research purposes. This information is not shared with the reviewer.
- Upload a diploma or transcript - If your degree is from a CACREP, APA, or CORE accredited counselor education program, just upload a copy. For other degrees, upload a transcript that shows your program included practice in counseling and supervision and at least one course in the career field.
- Upload a resume or curriculum vita - The resume/vita that you upload must document that career counseling is a primary focus. Evidence of such focus could include:
- Service provided in the field of career development,
- Publications related to the field in career development
- Research completed in the field of career development
- Participation in the NCDA Counselor Educator Academy
It must also document that you have taught career development for counselors at least 3 times.
- Syllabus - Illustrate your expertise in teaching career counseling by providing a sample syllabus.
- References - Three references are required. You provide an email address for the reference and the software sends a Reference Form to that person. After the reference form has been completed online, it will be automatically placed in your application. One of your references should be a Program or Department Chair who can comment on your skill as a teacher and the other two can be any professionals who know your skills.
- Attestations - You will be asked to attest that your work is your own, that your answers are correct, and that you have read the NCDA Code of Ethics and will abide by it. Click here to read the NCDA Code of Ethics 2015 now.
- Application Fee - The application fee is $175. Individuals whose applications are denied will not receive a refund. Fees are collected by PayPal.
- Complete the CCCE Case Studies - When the above steps are complete, you will be able to “Submit.” When you next look at your application, you will see four Case Studies. You must complete each case study in a single sitting. Once you look at the case study, you must complete your response within 60 minutes. You may not receive assistance from anyone else. After each case study, you may stop and return later.
- Blind Review - Your Syllabus, Case Study responses, and References will be sent to a professional trained as a reviewer. The reviewer will not receive any identifying information about you. The reviewer will score your responses. The review process typically takes three weeks to complete. You will be notified by email as soon as the review has been completed
- Certification - Once your application has been approved, you will receive written notice along with your certificate. The certification is valid for three years.
Those who do not pass their first attempt at the case studies may retest with a new question within one month. If the retest is also unsuccessful, the applicant must wait one year to reapply.
How do I keep my credential up-to-date?
Once awarded a credential, the certificant must pay an annual fee of $40.00. The certification will be in effect for a three (3) year period. The certificant must complete thirty (30) continuing education clock hours (CECH) in career development by the end of this 3-year period (essentially 10 hours per year). During this 3-year period, you can log your CECH in the Credential Holder Continuing Education Log . At the end of this period, you will be notified that it is time to renew and you should add any CECH you may need to your log. Recertification will be automatic if fees are paid annually and sufficient clock hours have been earned.

Once your information, including payment, has been completed, you will receive the link to continue the application process and upload the appropriate documents. When applying on that second link, you will be leaving the NCDA website and will be directed to create a new account within the new system. Your NCDA login will not work with the credentialing application system.
