Publications Activities and Open Positions

Several NCDA professional development activities in the areas of publications are in need of volunteers.

Below is a brief overview of the three open volunteer roles and the person to contact if you are interested in learning more or applying.

1. CAREER CONVERGENCE web magazine

Two Co-Associate Editors are needed in the Features Dept and Independent Practice Dept of the monthly publication. Responsibilities include:

  • Review and edit submissions to ensure they meet submission guidelines and reflect professional content;
  • Collaborate with your department's co-associate editor;
  • Prepare for publication one new article each month;
  • Discuss topics with Field Editors or authors;
  • Maintain contact with Editor, Melanie Reinersman;
  • Solicit authors and articles;
  • Participate in two meetings (usually one zoom) each year (if possible);
  • Continue in the role for at least two years.

2. PUBLICATIONS DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL (PDC)

NCDA members in good standing who have experience with and interest in publications are needed to volunteer to fill a vacancy on the Publication Development Council. The PDC is looking for 1-2 members to fulfill its task to coordinate the development of a high quality publications program that meets member needs, advances the field of career development, and increases the number of publications generating income for NCDA. PDC invites applications from members who would add diversity to the perspective of our current team. Therefore individuals from diverse groups and professional backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successful record of publication in professional journals, books, or book chapters
  • History with publication development, marketing, and distribution
  • Ability to attend and actively participate (including taking a future leadership role) in the PDC
  • Publications Development Council meetings/calls (virtual and/or live) up to 4 times per year.

3. CAREER DEVELOPMENTS MAGAZINE

This members-only magazine is published quarterly and is managed by the Editor, Associate Editor, and a volunteer Editorial Board. NCDA offers a stipend of $1000 per issue to the Associate Editor for the work outlined below. The Associate Editor should have writing and editing experience, hold membership in NCDA, and have experience in the career development field. A strong copy-editing skillset is necessary for this position. Read the details below or view more about Career Developments on the website.

Associate Editor Position Description:

  • Solicit contributor/manage and edit contribution for the Feature article, collaborating closely with NCDA Headquarters and the Editor of Career Developments.
  • Serve as a copy editor for all articles submitted for each issue of the magazine (between 9-11 articles) in collaboration with the Editor of Career Developments.
  • Assist Editor with final proof(s) of magazine received from publisher prior to print and PDF distribution as needed for proofreading and review.
  • Lead development of an assessment/quiz used to provide continuing education opportunities for magazine readers, per issue, as coordinated with the Editor.
  • Attend quarterly Editorial Board meetings.
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings with the Editor.
  • Provide timely communication with and feedback for the Editor via email and Dropbox.
  • Attend NCDA Global Career Development Conference, facilitating or co-facilitating roundtable discussion on Career Developments Magazine, promoting CD as a member benefit.
  • Promote Career Developments as a member benefit – at the conference, on the web, etc. other venues as appropriate.

The application deadline is October 31, 2022. NCDA hopes to fill this position in early November with the expectation that the new Associate Editor will immediately begin working with the Editor on the Spring 2023 Issue. Submission Requirements:

  • Letter of Intent outlining details about experience with NCDA, and writing/editing/publishing experience.
  • Resume outlining pertinent career development experience and educational/professional training.
  • Submit electronically in ONE attachment to mvenable@ncda.org by October 31, 2022.
